ABOUT

WHO AM I?

Hi there, my name is Robert Sharp, and I'm a Personal Trainer who specialises in training and coaching calisthenics. I've been doing calisthenics for over 4 years, and prior to that I did weight training for 4 years.
I started training back in 2016 when I was 15 years old. At the time I just wanted to get a bit bigger and stronger, without putting much thought into how to train optimally and how to handle my nutrition to  best maximise my progress.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the process, and seeing results was very gratifying and pushed me to keep going, but also to start doing more research into how to improve my training.

WHAT GOT ME INTO  CALISTHENICS?

I started my calisthenics journey at the start of the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Seeing as I had very little equipment, I thought I'd make the temporary switch to calisthenics until the gyms opened back up. Before I knew it, I had fallen into this amazing world of bodyweight training, and had completely fallen in love with this vast and eye catching style of exercising.

I immersed myself in the more functional side of calisthenics, to improve not just my strength, but also new areas I'd never worked on like my balance with the handstand and flexibility for my lower body like the forward fold. I started playing around and trying out new techniques and styles to further deepen my understanding of calisthenics to optimise my progress. All of this has made me the person I am today, and I'm still learning and expanding my knowledge with every chance I get.

WHAT DO I ENJOY ABOUT CALISTHENICS?

Quite a few things!

I really enjoy the long term journey of learning and mastering calisthenics and the sheer variety of skills you can learn. Many of the more impressive skills like the handstand, handstand push-up and muscle-up can take a long time to achieve, so you have to be willing to put the time and effort in! Even after 4 years of doing calisthenics, I'm still always looking to learn new skills that challenge me, because in calisthenics there's always something new for you to work towards. The rich variety also means it's completely up to you what skills you want to learn, there's no one path for everyone!

Calisthenics is a very satisfying form of training to progress in. There's always a detailed path that comes with learning a new skill, and that feeling of building your way up to each progression as you get closer and closer to your main goal until you finally achieve it is very rewarding.
Looking back on where I was when I started to where I am now, it's really gratifying to see how far I've come, and it makes me appreciate the work and passion I've put towards achieving each one of my goals. The goal I'm most proud of was being able to master the handstand push-up, which was one of the main skills that drew me into calisthenics in the first place, and now I can do it :) !

Another great thing about calisthenics is, since it requires little to no equipment, you can do it anywhere at anytime! You can train at home, outside in the park, on holiday, anywhere! For a lot of the exercises all you need is the floor and you're good to go!

Calisthenics also gave me a much better understanding and connection with my body when I'm exercising. Performing exercises with just your bodyweight helps you to understand how to properly engage each muscle to get the most out of the movement, and highlights the importance of having good form and how essential it is to making progress.

And lastly, it's very fun to do! Can't argue with that ;)

Here's me getting 5 reps on my handstand push-ups, very proud of this milestone :) !!

Still have trouble believing that that's me!

WHAT MADE ME WANT TO  TEACH CALISTHENICS VIA  ONLINE COACHING?

Calisthenics is amazing, and I think everyone should be incorporating it into their training, but it can be a bit confusing and overwhelming on where and how to start. Picking the wrong progression or choosing a skill that is too difficult for you can leave you stuck for months on end and be very frustrating.
Throughout my journey, I made those mistakes many times, and it really slowed down my progress and left me feeling like what I was trying to achieve was just impossible. Now having learnt how to train optimally, I believe it's my turn to help those who are where I was, and help guide them so they can avoid the mistakes I made.
The main responsibility I think you need to take on as a coach is to understand that everyone is different, and what works for one person might not work for someone else. It's up to me to help my clients find what works for them, and to tailor their program to get them the best results in a way that makes them enjoy the process. Anyone can achieve the goals they set for themselves, it's about understanding the best way each person can get there.
